The 10-point grading scale
Most Indian universities follow the UGC Choice Based Credit System. WES lists this as the most common scale:
| Letter | Meaning | Grade point |
|---|---|---|
| O | Outstanding | 10 |
| A+ | Excellent | 9 |
| A | Very good | 8 |
| B+ | Good | 7 |
| B | Above average | 6 |
| C | Average | 5 |
| P | Pass | 4 |
| F / Ab | Fail / absent | 0 |
Your CGPA is the credit-weighted average of these grade points. To work it out from your marks, use the GPA calculator with “Points” and a scale out of 10.
CGPA to percentage: use your university's rule
There is no national formula. Each university states its own in its regulations, and the result can differ by several points:
- VTU, 2015–2018 schemes and the 2021 regulations:
percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10. VTU's own example: 8.2 gives 74.5%. - VTU, 2025 regulations:
percentage = CGPA × 10, so 8.2 gives 82%. - Anna University, R2021 (as amended in 2023) and R2023:
percentage = CGPA × 10.
If your university isn't listed, look for “conversion of CGPA into percentage” in its regulations or on the back of your grade card. The ×9.5 multiplier that many sites use comes from CBSE's school grading and is not a university rule.
CGPA to a US 4.0 GPA
WES and other US evaluators convert each course separately and do not publish a CGPA formula. Dividing by 10 and multiplying by 4 (8.0 becomes 3.2) is shown above only as a rough indicator, and it usually understates strong Indian grades. Report your CGPA on its original scale unless a school asks for a conversion.
What UK universities ask for
For a 4-year Indian bachelor's degree, Cambridge treats 70% or CGPA 7.3 as a 2:1, 73% or 7.7 as a high 2:1 and 75% or 8.0 as a First. Most other UK universities ask for less. The full table for other countries is on the UK equivalents page.
German grade
German universities convert foreign grades with the modified Bavarian formula: 1 + 3 × (best − yours) ÷ (best − pass). On the 10-point scale the best grade is 10 and the pass mark is usually 4 (grade P). Some universities use a different pass mark, so check your transcript. Other scales are on the German grade calculator.
Questions
How do I convert CGPA to percentage?
Use the formula in your university’s regulations. VTU used (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 for its 2015–2021 schemes and uses CGPA × 10 from its 2025 regulations; Anna University uses CGPA × 10. Select your rule in the converter above.
Is CGPA × 9.5 correct?
Only for CBSE school results. Universities publish their own formulas, and admissions offices expect the one on your transcript or in your university’s regulations.
Is an 8 CGPA good for a UK master’s?
At Cambridge, a CGPA of 8.0 from a 4-year degree meets the First-class equivalent. Most UK universities ask for less.
What is 7.5 CGPA in a 4.0 GPA?
Simple scaling gives 3.0, but US evaluators convert course by course, and the result is often higher for students with mostly A and A+ grades. Report 7.5/10 unless the school asks for a converted GPA.
